Anonymous Spanish Suited pack, c.1720
A Spanish Suited pack, anonymous manufacturer, dated 1720. The pack contains 52 cards; unusual in that it has numeral cards up to 10, plus ‘Sotas’, ‘Caballos’ and ‘Reyes’. There are no manufacturer's details, licence inscription or tax mark which suggests it might be of foreign manufacture, intended to mimic Spanish production, or possibly produced in or for Latin American colonies. The designs are clearly archaic, including the Caballo de Oros facing backwards, and the Rey de Oros holding a battle axe. The decorative features are fluid and imaginative, in some instances slightly reminsicent of the French game of Aluette, and the cards have been well-coloured using stencils.
