L. P. Holmblad

Holmblad
L. P. Holmblad, Copenhagen, was an important Danish manufacturer of playing cards and other products. The card factory had been established by Jacob Holmblad, who obtained a royal licence for card manufacture in 1820; after his death in 1837, his son Lauritz Peter Holmblad (1815–1890) took over and greatly expanded the business. Holmblad introduced new manufacturing techniques and commissioned distinctive designs, producing French-suited cards as well as Danish Tarok. His Tarok packs replaced the traditional animal trumps with views of Copenhagen churches, castles and other buildings, with successive editions updating the designs. The card factory continued under the Holmblad name until the end of the 19th century and was subsequently succeeded by S. Salomon & Co.
