Shepherd and sheep advertising a herbal medicinal product to relieve sleep disorders.

1995 GermanyMedical & PharmaceuticalSchmid F.X.

Baldriparan is a herbal medicinal product for night-time use containing a dry extract of valerian root. It helps to reduce the time it takes to drift off by calming the nervous system. For more than 30 years, a shepherd and his sheep have been used in advertising campaigns for this product as they symbolise peaceful night-time rest, referencing the classic habit of counting sheep to fall asleep. With small design variations, the shepherd is on the kings, ewes on the queens and rams on the jacks, all treated humorously. The name of the product can be found on each one of the court cards. The manufacturer’s name is on the Ace of Clubs, while F.X. Schmid’s logo appears on the 9 of Hearts. The jolly, bearded shepherd pops up again on the reverse with some of his sheep in a double-ended design. See the box
