Hindu Astro-Mythological Tarot
A hand-painted Ganjifa pack adapts tarot’s major and minor structure to Hindu astrological and mythological subjects.
An unusual 78-card deck, conceptualised by Kishor N. Gordhandas, was hand-painted by artists from Sawantwadi in 1990; their names are not given. Its Hindu astro-mythological subjects are divided into 22 “major arcane” cards and 56 “minor arcanas”.[1]
A 2008 Gulf News profile reports that Gordhandas had more than 4,500 cards, gathered from 70 countries.[2] His Ganjifa collecting took him to artists across India; he stayed with makers in Sawantwadi and other centres to learn their regional forms. He later recalled that “every sitting was a learning experience.”[2] His Sawantwadi work also included a design partnership with Rajmata Satvashiladevi Bhonsle. Together they designed themed Ganjifa decks for the Sawantwadi Palace Workshop, which produces cards under the name Sawantwadi Lacquerwares.
The 22-card “major arcane” group contains nine planetary cards, twelve zodiac subjects, and a Joker. The Joker shows Narad Muni, the travelling sage and musician associated with devotion to Vishnu.[3] The remaining 56 cards make up four 14-card suits, identified by their pip symbols: Knowledge
, Lotus
, Trident
and Missile
. Each suit has cards numbered 1–10 and four courts: King, Queen, Vehicle and Abode. Vehicle cards depict the deity’s mount; Abode cards name the deity’s realm. For example, in the Missile suit, the Vehicle card shows Airavata, Indra’s mythical white elephant, and the Abode card is Indrapuri, Indra’s heavenly city.[4] The cards are rectangular and measure 11 by 8.2 centimetres.
