The World of Playing Cards Logo

Playing cards have been with us since the 14th century, when they first entered popular culture. Over the centuries packs of cards, in all shapes and sizes, have been used for games, gambling, education, conjuring, advertising, fortune telling, political messages or the portrayal of national or ethnic identity. All over the world, whatever language is spoken, their significance is universal. Their popularity is also due to the imaginative artwork and graphic design which is sometimes overlooked, and the “then & now” of how things have changed.

The IPCS offers up-to-date information with a quarterly magazine which is distributed to all members around the world, and has reviews of new issues, new publications, the latest investigations, the best research articles on the history of playing cards and card games… the IPCS opens a real window on the world. You will learn about unfamiliar packs, different types of playing cards from different countries, tarot and other card games, as well as correspondence from other members. You will be kept informed of other playing card societies worldwide, including dealers and auctions.

The IPCS organises a convention every year in a pleasant town, with talks, exhibition and trading sessions, so permitting members to meet other enthusiasts, to socialise, make new friends and to exchange. It also helps young researchers and playing-card designers…
