If you would like to submit an article, start a discussion, or add a comment to The World of Playing Cards, please use the submission form or the relevant links on the site. All material is reviewed before publication. Review is a practical check, not a judgement on “correct” opinions. We look for three things: is it within the site’s scope, can we publish it, and will it be useful to readers?
The site covers playing cards across cultures and centuries, including games, advertising, satire, magic, fortune telling and modern collecting. Some pages are documentary and referenced. Others describe how cards are used, including tarot, cartomancy and oracle practice.
Here’s what helps a submission move through review quickly. Start with the cards. Name the pack, say what it is, and tell readers what you’re showing, and why it is of interest. If it’s your own work, let readers know. If you’re writing from a tradition, belief or personal practice, let readers know that too.
For articles, aim to present the pack or subject clearly and in a way that can stand on its own. Include relevant details where known, such as maker, publisher, artist, date or origin, and anything about the edition or production. Articles do not need to be long, but they should be complete enough to be useful.
Discussions are for questions, identification requests, or points that are not yet resolved. Make it clear what you are asking about and include as much helpful detail as possible. Clear images are especially important here, as they allow others to respond more effectively.
Comments are attached to existing articles and should relate directly to the page. Use them to add information, point out an error, mention a related pack, or ask a relevant question. Keep comments concise and to the point.
If you write about meanings or readings, make the basis clear. Are you working from a named tradition, a guidebook or your own practice? Anchor the writing to the specific pack and the specific cards you’re discussing, rather than general claims that could apply to any deck.
Credits and sources matter. Credit every image, and include references for any books, catalogues or websites you draw from. If you include specifics such as maker, publisher, artist, date, origin, edition history or production method, add a reference or say how you know.
Only submit material that you have the right to publish. Where you have used information or images from other sources, you should include references and give proper credit. If you are unsure about any of this, leave a note in your submission. We would rather clarify than remove something later.
Include clear images. Straight, readable scans or photographs with short captions are ideal, whether you are showing the cards, the box, a booklet, advertising, wrappers or other related material. If you can, note whether the pack is complete, and which edition or printing you are documenting.
We look forward to reading your contribution.
