Playing cards with colour photos of buildings and monuments in and around Riga.
The 53 colour photos in this souvenir pack of Riga are all quite sharp and relatively up-to-date. For instance, the splendid new National Library of Latvia, opened in 2014, is shown on the Queen of Spades. The names and locations of the views are listed in English on a double-sided extra card and in Latvian in a separate leaflet. There is also a “SPECIMEN” card – an unusual feature in a modern pack – tucked in the box but outside the cello wrapping. The cards have a very glossy finish. Roddy started collecting stamps on his 8th birthday. In 1977 he joined the newly formed playing-card department at Stanley Gibbons in London before setting up his own business in Edinburgh four years later. His collecting interests include playing cards, postcards, stamps (especially playing cards on stamps) and sugar wrappers. He is a Past President of the Scottish Philatelic Society, a former Chairman of the IPCS, a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards and Curator of the WCMPC’s collection of playing cards. He lives near Toulouse in France.
