Birb playing cards
Birds are not merely illustrated on the cards but become the court cards themselves.
Feathers flourish in this phenomenally executed deck that melds various bird species and the international pattern courts in a way that stays true to both. The creator, Tracey Churray, got the idea when she saw a rooster design on a box of Kincho mosquito coils in a Tokyo 7-11 and thought it’d make a perfect King of Hearts. The deck’s name, “Birb,” comes from internet slang for birds.
Tracey said, via direct message, that while she wouldn’t consider herself a birder, she loves birds in all form and had even gone on bird tours in Patagonia. Her cards are hand-illustrated, with each species identified by the extra card . The color palette, predominantly blue, black, red, and yellow, echoes classic playing-card colors. Crests and plumage substitute for crowns, helmets, and royal regalia, whilst the ace symbols are transformed into bird faces. Two jokers – an original design and a charming avian take on the standard Bicycle joker – complete the deck. It was printed using makeplayingcards.com.

I'm a US-based author and journalist. I've been collecting playing cards since I was about 8 years old, when I got mesmerized by the various decks that were used in Soviet Ukraine, where I'm from. I collect mainly European decks such as those by Dondorf, Grimaud, and Piatnik. I love courts above all else, and am drawn toward historical and artistic decks.
