Prague Heraldic Poker Cards
Heraldic souvenir playing cards infused with Czech national and historical symbolism.
This souvenir poker card deck was issued by the Czech company Suvenyry.com, a manufacturer of promotional goods and European-themed souvenirs, as a visual homage to Prague's historic and cultural identity. The packaging and card backs feature sepia-toned images of Prague landmarks, designed to resemble vintage postcards and lend a nostalgic tourism aesthetic. Decorative elements like postage stamps, postmarks, and cursive labels reinforce the effect.
The face cards use simplified vector illustrations with neo-traditional heraldic motifs, marked by strong colour contrasts, especially in red and yellow tones, which emphasize the visual structure of the designs. The court cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) prominently display coats of arms and medieval helmets. Each figure is identical across all suits:
- King: pot helmet with the small Czech national coat of arms and flags.
- Queen: barred helmet with the coat of arms of Prague.
- Jack: visor helmet and freestanding small Czech national coat of arms.
- Joker: uses the smiling theatre mask from the traditional tragic-comic pair, from the theatre symbol.
The word “Praha” (Czech for Prague) is inscribed on several cards, reinforcing the city-specific souvenir identity. The pip symbols have been slightly softened in design, with rounder and more delicate shapes. This gives them a gentler appearance compared to standard forms.
