Braathens SAFE playing cards
Airline advertising pack combining international courts with horizontal images of passenger aircraft.
Braathens SAFE was founded in Oslo in 1946, operating initially as a charter airline. Ten different aircraft from its fleet are shown in horizontal format on the aces to 10s in this pack (the same in each suit). The last of the aircraft depicted here, the Boeing 737-500, entered service in 1990, only a few years before Braathens SAFE merged with Scandinavian Airlines System to become SAS Braathens, so this pack must have had a fairly short life. The international pattern has been used on the court cards, together with standard Carta Mundi jokers. Two additional cards feature a bridge scoring table and a brief description of the different aircraft. • See the box
Above: airline playing cards made by Carta Mundi, Turnhout, Belgium, for Braathens SAFE, Oslo, Norway, c1990. 2 cards + 2 Jokers + 2 extra cards in tuck box. Size: 56 x 87 mm. The box looks the same front and back.
There are some design similarities between this pack and the British Airways History of Passenger Flight cards, issued at approximately the same time, also printed by Carta Mundi.
