Papyrus Playing Cards
Papyrus playing cards distributed by Egypt Trade, c.1996.

There are many decks that are called ‘Papyrus Playing Cards’, yet none I have found live up to that name as a genuine description, except these.
Brought back from Egypt in 1996, this 52 card deck with 2 jokers are printed on actual papyrus, coated in a clear lacquer. The company associated with them is Egypt Trade, though whether this is the printer or distributor remains to be seen. Each card is decorated with Hieroglyphs and Ancient Egyptian art. There are forty unique designs on the pip cards A-10, and three repeated designs on the courts. The jokers are identical. Despite the thinness of the papyrus, these cards are highly durable and very flexible. The actual texture of the papyrus can be felt through the lacquer! Beautiful set of cards.

I've played card games from the age of three, collecting all things "cards" from 16 and finally started to specialise at 58! Thanks to these wonderful pages and a certain Mr Lodge, my main interest is in British decks, with examples of the English standard pattern in other countries. I am beginning to develop a liking for Belgium and German cards, too. It's nice to be able to spend time writing profiles for WOPC, on more modern yet beautiful decks. Looking forward to retiring in April, when I can spend more time on this wonderful interest.
