Chambord
A Renaissance-style pack with ornate court cards and gilded corners.
Chambord is a 1952 pack manufactured by Héron and designed by A. Belliard. Its detailed Renaissance-style designs and gilded corners give the cards a distinctive character.
One source suggests that A. Belliard was Adolphe Belliard, a Montmartre artist whose life spanned most of the 20th century, although this attribution is not certain.
Some packs included a presentation card explicitly naming the set “Chambord”, see the card , although its inclusion may not have been standard. I own two mint-condition sets, one double and one single, neither of which includes this card.
The backs have a gold overprint that is not clearly visible in scans. They come in either a double or single case, both made of transparent plastic embossed with the Héron brand name. The pack contains 52 cards, 2 jokers and 1 Héron advertising card, measures 87 x 58 mm, and is listed in Fournier, Vol. 1, page 155, no. 406 (France).
Above: court cards in detailed Renaissance costume, with full-length figures and ornate clothing.
Above: kings and aces, including decorative suit emblems surrounded by ornamental frames.
Above: number cards, a joker, the Héron advertising card, and the pack’s blue and red backs.
