Baraja Vasca
Spanish Basque Country deck with original drawings by María Isabel Ibañez de Sendadiano.
The court cards are presented as traditional Basque figures: dancers (dantzaris), shepherd (pastor), fisherman (pescador), mayor (alcalde), blacksmith (ferrón), barmaid (cantinera), water carrier (aguadora), sardine seller (sardinera). The four suits are Basque Country symbols: ‘txikito’ glasses for cups, swords, ‘makilas’ (walking sticks) for clubs and ‘laburus’ for coins. The ace of coins features a large Lauburu with the inscription “Gora Euskadi”.
Above: Basque Country deck of 40 cards published by Fournier in 1979 for the Gran Enciclopedia Vasca y Diputación Foral de Álava. Presented in a sliding velvet case with gold engraving "Diputación Foral de Álava".
