The Somnia Tarot: Illustrated Edition was published in 2023 by artist Nicolas Bruno. It adapts his photographic tarot project to the familiar Rider-Waite-Smith sequence, using photography, sculpture and costume design to give the cards a distinctly dreamlike character.
Bruno’s work grew from dream journals and his experience of sleep paralysis. The images retain the recognisable structure of the Rider-Waite-Smith pack while replacing conventional drawn scenes with staged photographic compositions. Figures are obscured, costumes and props become part of the symbolism, and familiar archetypes take on a more personal, unsettled quality.
The original photographic edition was independently crowdfunded in March 2021, reaching its goal on launch day. A later Kickstarter campaign for the Revised Edition and Oracle Series raised $80,575 from 731 backers against a $36,000 goal, reaching 224% funding. The Illustrated Edition followed as a separate 2023 presale, with 78 full-colour cards in a two-part box with an information booklet. The official product information gives the cards as 400gsm and credits AdMagic as printer. This edition also includes two additional cards, presented as jokers, whose role is left open to the reader.
