Paul Durand (1925-1977) was a prolific French artist and illustrator who contributed work to many French newspapers and magazines. He also designed numerous book covers. However, this jeu des 7 familles is thought to be the only card game illustrated by him. The theme is 7 historical periods, from ancient to more modern (Mammouth, Ramses, du Manoir, Poule au Pot, Bien-Aimé, Incroyable, and Charleston). The cards in each set of 6 match up, creating a continuous frieze. Durand’s creations predate those of James Hodges but there are strong similarities in terms of style. One big difference between this and more traditional jeux des 7 familles is the inclusion of a Fiancé and a Fiancée (as cards 5 and 6 in the set) in place of the grandparents.
