Le Régime Bush
“Le Régime Bush” anti-war playing cards designed by Thierry Meyssan, France, 2003.
Sub-titled “Les 52 plus dangereux dignitaries américains” this French pack was designed by Thierry Meyssan (b. 1957). He is a French journalist, conspiracy theorist and political activist, better known for his books: 9/11: The Big Lie (2002) and Before Our Very Eyes, Fake Wars and Big Lies: From 9/11 to Donald Trump (2019). This pack challenges the official account of events of the September 11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent rationale for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Photographs of the key figures are shown by category in the four suits: spades - organisation; diamonds - exploitation; clubs -repression; hearts - communication. An extra card advertises Meyssan’s book on 9/11. See the box►
The box provides the following information (translated from the French):
“A behind the scenes look of the Bush administration reveals a team, carrying out a "neo-conservative" revolution in total opposition with the history and values of their country. George W. Bush seized power with the complicity of the Supreme Court and despite electoral results that were against him; a global citizen surveillance system was set up through the USA Patriot Act; the Army was allowed to intervene in domestic policy; a propaganda machine was set up; the country abdicated its right to self-rule and has launched itself into a series of colonial campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. What we are witnessing is not simply a change in policies but the emergence of a new regime that threatens liberty in America and international peace”.

I graduated in Russian and East European Studies from Birmingham University in 1969. It was as an undergraduate in Moscow in 1968 that I stumbled upon my first 3 packs of “unusual” playing cards which fired my curiosity and thence my life-long interest. I began researching and collecting cards in the early 1970s, since when I’ve acquired over 3,330 packs of non-standard cards, mainly from North America, UK and Western Europe, and of course from Russia and the former communist countries.
Following my retirement from the Bodleian Library in Dec. 2007 I took up a new role as Head of Library Development at the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) to support library development in low-income countries. This work necessitated regular training visits to many sub-Saharan African countries and also further afield, to Vietnam, Nepal and Bangladesh – all of which provided rich opportunities to further expand my playing card collection.
Since 2019 I’ve been working part-time in the Bodleian Library where I’ve been cataloguing the bequest of the late Donald Welsh, founder of the English Playing Card Society.
