Politiker-Skat by Bubec
Caricatures of world leaders, including many German politicians, by the artist Bubec.
Of the several packs with caricatures of heads of state and senior politicians by the German caricaturist known as Bubec (real name Lutz Backes, b. 1938), this is the only one created for the German market. The pack has indices in German and includes six prominent German politicians of the period, namely Jochen Vogel, Willy Brandt, Helmut Kohl, Hans Dietrich Genscher, Karl Carstens and Franz Josef Strauss. On the Ace of Spades is Yuri Andropov (or Jurij Andropow) who died in February 1984, having led the Soviet Union for only about 15 months. François Mitterrand’s surname is incorrectly spelt “Mitterand”. The manufacturer’s name appears on the 7 of Diamonds. The styling of the diamond suit-signs is typical of an A.S.S. production. The back design is common to all the packs in this series but this is the only one set on a yellow ground.
