Justice playing cards
Ethical concepts in a deck produced by Riccardo Conturbia’s Passione Playing Cards Ltd.
As a playing card collector himself, Riccardo Conturbia admired beautifully-designed modern decks. He founded Passione with the goal of introducing Italian artists into the industry. “While working on the first ideas, I met several designers and explored different concepts. We soon realized that a single project or one-man company was not enough to satisfy our passion; our projects were growing and we felt the need to give solid foundations to our efforts and dreams” - Interview on Kardify►
One of these projects was Justice playing cards, which incorporates ethical concepts of rectitude and virtue into a deck aimed at players, magicians and cardists. There were also twin decks titled Equality & Integrity. The ace of spades has the scales of justice motif with the publisher’s name and date.
The cards were crowdfunded on Kicksarter by 193 backers who pledged $10,558 to help bring the project to life between May 18 2019 - Jun 7 2019 (20 days).
The court cards, by Giordano Loddo for Passione Playing Cards, were designed to be fresh but classic, stylish but usable on every occasion. The Jokers represent the Lady of Justice and were conceived by John Cho. The background to the jokers is the all-seeing sun. The justice theme is also found on the backs, the box and the extra gaff card .
Sadly, Passione Playing Cards closed down at the end of 2020 after six years in business. According to Riccardo, the reason for this was that Passione never really caught on, the appreciation was limited to a niche within playing cards lovers.

Above: Justice playing cards designed by John Cho and Giordano Loddo, published by Passione Playing Cards, printed by Shenzhen Wangjing Printing Co., Ltd. (WJPCC) in China, 2019. 700 decks only.

I am the founder of The World of Playing Cards (est. 1996), a website dedicated to the history, artistry and cultural significance of playing cards and tarot. Over the years I have researched various areas of the subject, acquired and traded collections and contributed as a committee member of the IPCS and graphics editor of The Playing-Card journal. Having lived in Chile, England, Wales, and now Spain, these experiences have shaped my work and passion for playing cards. Amongst my achievements is producing a limited-edition replica of a 17th-century English pack using woodblocks and stencils—a labour of love. Today, the World of Playing Cards is a global collaborative project, with my son Adam serving as the technical driving force behind its development. His innovative efforts have helped shape the site into the thriving hub it is today. You are warmly invited to become a contributor and share your enthusiasm.
